The Peter Max Astrologicalendar
Peter Max: The groovy, cosmic, psychedelic icon who hit the counter-culture like a bottle rocket circa 1967. A scant few years later in 1970, he'd moved on from hippie flyers to entire exhibitions and Life magazine covers. And calendars.
The Peter Max 1971 Astrologicalendar Calendar was printed up by Grosset & Dunlap that year, featuring wonderfully trippy and searingly colorful depictions of the 12 zodiac signs in lieu of the months that they loosely correlate with.
Thanks to the fascinating 60s/70s pop psychedelia themed website Peculiar Manicule, the entire thing is online.
Check out all the zodiacs here, or visit the website post for scans of the entire thing, with all the days listed – it'll be reusable in 2027!
That's it for Peter Max! Since this issue was light on the words, I figured I'd break format and drop in a few link roundups of fun recommendations.
First, here's very cool newsletter that I think my readers will all enjoy: The Art of Cover Art. It tackles album art history with a focus on cool microtrends and interesting observations. One great example of what to expect: This issue on the backs of people's heads on album art.
Other cool newsletters include Transfer Orbit, great for science fiction news, and Vintage RPG, by the guy behind the great Monsters, Aliens, and Holes in the Ground (which you should check out if you liked my art book and you want the same thing, but about RPG history and with more analysis).
